Association of American Universities
Association of American Universities is abbreviated as AAU. The AAU is the nation’s premiere association of research universities both public and private. The membership is based on a set of metrics and may be even more importantly, existing members recognizing your achievements and voting you in. It comprises of 64 universities in the United States (both public as well as private) and two universities in Canada. Being an AAU member means we are among the most research active universities in the country and they should all take proud in it. This is going to result in us being able to accelerate the brightest and most capable minds that we are able to attract the university. 1 Association of American Universities Organization
The Association of American Universities Organization was established on 28 February, 1900 in United States through a group of 14 Doctor of Philosophy degree granting universities to standardize doctoral programs in America. American universities beginning with Johns Hopkins University in 1876 by adopting the intensive research German model of higher education. The presidents of different universities like Harvard University, Columbia University, Johns Hopkins University, University of California and University of Chicago sent a invitation letter to nine other universities like Catholic University of America, Clark University, Princeton University, Cornell University, Stanford University, University of Wisconsin, University of Pennsylvania, Yale University and University of Michigan to meet in February 1900 at Chicago to promote and elevate standards. The members of AAU elected first chairman as David Starr Jordan and association’s first president as Charles William Eliot.
The main purpose of organization is to offer a forum for the establishment and implementation of institutional policies for higher education, science and innovation to promote undergraduate and graduate education and also strengthens the contributions of leading research universities.

The members of Association of American Universities accounted for 58% of United States universities research grants and 52% of doctorates are awarded in United States. 43% of all Nobel Prize winners and 74% of winners at U.S. institutions have been affiliated with AAU university. Approximately two-thirds of American Academy of Science and Arts are also associated with an AAU university. The faculty members at AAU include 2,993 members of United States National Academics: National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Sciences and Institute of Medicine. 4 Membership of Association of American Universities
The assertive vote of three-fourths of current members is required for AAU membership by evaluating the expansion and quality of university programs of research, graduate and undergraduate education. The ranking of the member is done by keeping in mind four standards like percentage of faculty who are members of the National Academies, research spending, faculty awards as well as citations. All 66 U.S. members of AAU classified as Highest Research Activity Universities through Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education.
